In a faux pas of epic proportions, the Boston Red Sox have let the 2012 Opening Day cat out of the bag!

Scutaro on the Green Monster

Marco Scutaro Tribute on the Green Monster!

Yesterday someone at the Sox mistakenly posted a copy of the planned Opening Day changes to Fenway’s famed “Green Monster” on their Facebook page. Needless to say, it went viral in minutes and now everyone knows what the big Opening Day surprise was going to be – Marco Scutaro immortalized on the most famous left field wall in all of baseball!

The significance of this tribute can not be over-stated because not only will Scoot’s image be seen on the Green Monster thru out the 2012 season, 2012 is also the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park. That means the Green Monster’s photo (and Scoot’s) will be seen continuously and world-wide during 2012.

No one in the Sox organization has admitted it, but the universal feeling is that John Henry was the person behind this unprecedented tribute to a present-day Sox player. Henry’s reliance on Marco during the darkest of dark September days this past Fall when it seemed that Red Sox Nation was disintegrating is well known. To this day, John even believes that he saw Scoot “walk on water” during an appletini-laced dinner meeting with Scutaro held on the Iroquois, Henry’s yacht, this past September (see the related post, “Appletini-Induced Miracle or The Real Thing?”).

Other sources have told this blog that John Henry made the following comment in a recent meeting with baseball ops personnel and Larry Lucchino, the defacto General Mgr. of the Sox, “Having Scoot’s mug on the Green Monster during the 2012 season will help Red Sox Nation deal with home run after home run off opposing bats going over the famed left field wall!”

With millions of dollars needed to be spent on the “Liverpool Operation” (code for the Liverpool F.C. pro soccer team now owned by the Red Sox), a third place or worse Red Sox finish in 2012 is all but assured, that is, unless Scoot can again put forth a super human effort, but this time for an entire season!

The surprise is gone, but this tribute to Marco Scutaro will hopefully live on forever!
